– An army base has been built in Buratai, hometown of chief of army staff General Tukur Buratai, to stop more Boko Haram attacks
– General Buratai said the headquarters of the 331 Artillery Tactical Forward Operation Base (FOB) will be a ‘game changer’ in the war against the insurgents
– Lucky Irabor, a Major General and Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole said the strategic location of Buratai town makes the creation of the Army headquarters there a very necessary move
Chief of army staff General Tukur Buratai has launched a newly built headquarters of the 331 Artillery Tactical Forward Operation Base (FOB) at his hometown Buratai in Biu local government area of Borno state.
Premium Times reports through the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the FOB which General Buratai launched on Saturday, October 22 once operated out of his house in the town which was partially destroyed by Boko Haram terrorists some time back.
Buratai described the base as a ‘game changer’ in war against Boko Haram and justified its establishment in his hometown in the incessant attacks by terrorists at Buni Yadi in Yobe state.
He assured that more of such bases would be set up in other areas in the North East in due time.
Premium Times quotes NAN as saying that the Buratai district, which links Biu from Damaturu axis, also links three other state capitals in the North East- Maiduguri, Gombe and Yola.
Lucky Irabor, a Major General and Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole agreed that the need for an FOB at Buratai could not be understated. He noted that fierce battles occurred between the army and Boko Haram fighters in the place because of its strategic location.
“The strategic location and importance of Biu, Buratai and environs makes the Boko Haram terrorists highly interested in the area.
“The insurgents carried out several attacks within the villages in the vicinity, resulting to the loss of lives, injuries and looting, and destruction of properties.
“This gave rise to high sense of fear among the inhabitants and most of them have to relocate,” NAN quoted Irabor as saying.
Meanwhile, Buratai on Tuesday, October 18, said all Boko Haram terrorists have been eliminated from Nigerian territory.
The army chief speaking in Lagos state at the Albati Barracks while commissioning some structures said most of the terrorists’ attacks are carried out by insurgents from the Lake Chad Basin.
Buratai said these attacks are mostly carried out outside the borders of Nigeria.
